Instead of using caustic soda (alkali) for neutralization, which generates significant volumes of soapstock and contaminated wastewater, physical refining utilizes steam distillation under high temperature and vacuum conditions. This innovative approach is typically integrated into the final deodorization step, where volatile components, including FFA, odors, and off-flavors, are stripped away by injecting live steam directly into the oil.
This results in a highly refined oil product and a valuable fatty acid distillate (a marketable by-product), showcasing a cleaner, more efficient, and more sustainable process.
The Physical Refining Process involves a combination of pre-treatment and steam distillation steps, ensuring optimal removal of free fatty acids and volatile impurities while preserving oil quality.
Pre-treatment to remove phospholipids (gums) by treating the crude oil with a food-grade acid (like phosphoric or citric acid) and water, preparing the oil for the next stages. It is Carried out in continuous flow with static mixers and centrifuges.
The degummed oil is mixed with activated bleaching earth or clay under vacuum and heat. This adsorbs and removes color pigments, residual gums, metal traces, and oxidation products. The spent earth is then filtered out. It utilizes bleaching earth and activated carbon under vacuum conditions.
This is the crucial physical refining step. The bleached oil is subjected to high temperature around 240°C – 260°C under deep vacuum (1–3 mbar). Live steam is sparged through the oil, stripping off the volatile FFA, odor compounds, and taste components, yielding the final refined, bleached, and deodorized (RBD) oil. FFAs are stripped off as distillate, producing clear, odorless, and stabilized oil. The Heat recovery systems optimize steam usage and reduce thermal load.
Recovered fatty acids are condensed and collected for sale or reuse — minimizing waste and improving plant profitability.
