Edible Oil Refining Process Overview:

A refining process should give the best products reducing the requirements of energy, bleaching earth, floor area and labor to a minimum. TINYTECH process systems are useful for refining any crude edible / non-edible oil:

Degumming Process

This is first process performed in refining for removal of Phosphatides also known as Gums. The content of gums in crude oil varies although every oil has certain proportion. Oil Degumming prepares the Degummed Oil for subsequent Alkali and Physical Refining.

There are 2 types of Phosphatides: Hydratable and Non-Hydratable.

The Hydratable Phosphatides are removed by addition of Water and Phosphoric Acid to the Raw Oil which hydrates the Phosphatides. They can be removed by centrifugation.

Non-Hydratable Phosphatides are more oil soluble. Little Caustic can be given to perform Partial Neutralization with Dilute Lye. Normally certain Reagents like Acid are given to convert into Hydratable ones for further flushing off.

The Free Fatty Acids in the Crude Oil are responsible for the Oil Acidity, and it is desired to remove them. Alkali Neutralization process removes the Free Fatty Acids (FFA) by adding Caustic Soda (NaOH Alkali). Oil is heated up to about 60°C in a Reactor with Thermal Oil under controlled Agitation.

By-Product Soap stock formation occurs due to chemical reaction and allowed to settle at the bottom of the Neutralizers from where it is collected to Soap Pan Tanks. Next process is Hot Water Wash to the oil to remove traces of soap particle & free alkali.

The Pre-Treated Oil obtained will be Free from Soap Stock, Light in Color and it is known as Washed Neutralized Oil.

The neutralized oil is transferred for the Bleaching Process. Temperature is raised so that excess moisture is removed by Heating. For excess Color Removal, the Pre-determined quantity of Bleaching Earth and Activated Carbon is used under Vacuum in Bleacher where Oil is heated up to high temperature of around 120°C with continuous stirring operation.

The mixture of Oil + Clay is allowed to undergo Filtration process to separate the Spent earth and Sediments. The clear oil will be Golden in color with good appeal.

This is the final stage in oil refining. The bleached oil is heated at high temperature and high vacuum in the Deodorization process to remove unwanted components.

Tinytech Deodorizers remove the unpleasant odors from the oil along with peroxide reduction. Good quality Open Steam is given to the oil for Sparging which Vaporizes the FFA and Odoriferous Compounds.

Once the process cycle is complete the oil obtained will be Odorless & light in color.

After cooling it will pass through Polishing Filter to obtain sparkling light color for packing, which will be used as Edible Oil.
